Another Excerpt from Another Great Novel

An excerpt from my favorite part of the KINGDOM HEARTS novel. Traverse Town was the best-written part, and the Leon battle was really well done. It feels very cinematic even before the battle begins.

“They’ll come at you out of nowhere.”

“Who’s there?!” Sora jumped down the steps in front of the shop and turned with the Keyblade ready to face the man behind him.

“And they’ll keep coming at you… as long as you continue to wield the Keyblade.” The man had a strange kind of sword across his back, a huge gun with a blade at the end of it. His long hair fluttered in the night breeze, and a smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth.

Then he let out a sigh, his shoulders drooping. The breeze moved his hair aside, revealing a big scar on his face. “But why would it choose a kid like you?”

“Hey, what’s that supposed to mean?”

“Never mind. Now, let me see that Keyblade.”

The man came closer. Sora shifted, ready to fight. “What? There’s no way you’re getting this!”

He smiled coldly. “… All right, then, we’ll have to do this the hard way.”

I always thought Leon was a jerk for beating up Sora, but the KINGDOM HEARTS novel takes it to a new level. Leon clearly enjoys that he’s about to beat up a child.
